Make the Activities More Meaningful

Although this might appear to be a long list of activities, all of these activities are pretty simple, and often coincide with an activity you are already doing.

The first week of Advent you are likely pulling out your Advent wreath and Nativity scene. You are also buying chocolates for the feast of St. Nicholas. The goal of the Home Advent and Christmas Challenge is to make those activities more meaningful and more focused on Christ.

HOME Advent and Christmas Challenge will help you add prayer to these common at-home Advent activities, and dive deeper into the meaning and significance behind these traditions.

HOME Advent and Christmas Challenge will also help you discover new traditions and live the Advent and Christmas seasons well.

You want Advent to feel like what it is — a holy season of waiting and preparation. But the world around you is already celebrating, and the familiar Jesse Tree stories you have read together before no longer grab your children’s attention or invite them into this sacred season.

The Church gives us four weeks to slow down, to wait, to prepare, but if you are honest, even you have a hard time entering the waiting when everything around you is already celebrating. You have tried the Jesse Tree before, and you know it is beautiful, but familiarity has a way of dulling wonder. You find yourself reading aloud to glazed eyes...until your family drifts away from the study...and from Advent altogether.

Product Description

Catholic families who love the Jesse Tree tradition need a fresh set of stories that can recapture the wonder of waiting and hold the whole family in a spirit of anticipation, all the way to Christmas Eve.

We Wait for the Lord is a fresh Jesse Tree Advent devotional built around 29 lesser-known men and women of the Old Testament. These men and women rarely get the spotlight, but their stories are just as essential to the story of salvation.

Open it on the first Sunday of Advent and go. No prep. Just gather your family and go.

Each day, your family will meet a figure that may be new to them. They will see the unshakeable faith of Job, the confident obedience of Caleb, and the surprising women God placed at the center of salvation history: Sarah, Rebekah, Leah, Miriam, Rahab, Anna. Even the imperfect ones — Esau, Saul — are here, because their stories reveal something just as important: nothing we do can stop God's love from pursuing us. By Christmas Eve, your family will have walked the entire sweep of salvation history and arrive at the manger with hearts that have truly waited.

Make This Advent Holy

With We Wait for the Lord, your family enters Advent with something they don't have: genuine curiosity. These are stories they haven't heard before, figures they haven't met, and a God whose relentless pursuit of humanity keeps revealing itself in new and surprising ways. Each night as you read the devotion, your children lean in, and the waiting becomes real. And on Christmas morning, when you place the final figure in the Jesse Tree, your family will feel the joy of the people who have truly waited for their King.

Age Recommendation

We Wait for the Lord is written to be read aloud in a family or classroom setting. It is ideal for school-age children through adults, and works beautifully for families with a wide range of ages gathered together. Designed to be used year after year, no matter how long Advent happens to be.

Short, Powerful Reflections, Perfect for Busy Families

Each day's reflection follows the same format:

1. Colorful image
2. Scripture passage
3. Reflection that connects to Jesus
4. Family prayer

This devotional will engage the hearts and minds of all family members, from adults to toddlers. Each reflection is short and powerful because we know how busy the Advent season often is. You can complete each day's devotion in five minutes or less.
